Hospital-Induced Delirium: How can you help?

Date

A hospital can be an overwhelming environment for anyone. The many sounds, bright lighting and bustle of people can be a source of stress and over-stimulation.

For elderly individuals, especially those living with cognitive issues, this over-stimulation can have a significant impact on health outcomes.

Hospital induced delirium can effect anyone at any age. It can be related to medication issues, stress, exacerbation of existing cognitive or health issues – or any combination of these factors. Among the most vulnerable are those already experiencing symptoms of dementia or any type of cognitive decline.

Management and Treatment

This type of delirium must be managed on an individual basis to determine the root cause and an appropriate path to recovery. Medication adjustments, frequent reorientation to surroundings and emotional support can all be part of the strategy.

How can you help?

Contact and visits from family or friends can help to avoid onset or support recovery for someone experiencing delirium in hospital. If you are unable to be present at all times, try to visit during key hours or moments:

  • If hydration or nutrition are a concern, plan visits during meal times to offer assistance and support. Dehydration or insufficient food intake can contribute to an increased risk of delirium and delay recovery from illness.
  • If specific procedures or tests are likely to cause anxiety, try to be present  when they occur to provide reassurance.
  • Companionship during daytime hours can help prevent sleeping all day and disturbance of the normal sleep-wake cycle.
  • If you know someone is particularly anxious during the night, consider an overnight companion.

The right caregiver can also make a huge difference for those individuals who are hospitalized and need additional support. BethCare has worked with many families to help improve outcomes and reduce the stress and distress that is so often associated with a medical crisis.
